As I’ve mentioned many times, much stomach bloating is caused by undigested food remaining in your gut, which ferments and produces the gas which blows your stomach up.
Eating raw food (such as salad, fruit, nuts and seeds) is often recommended.
Fresh, unprocessed food like this is full of natural fiber which helps push undigested food along, thus clearing your stomach. It also stimulates your digestive system properly, meaning you’re much less likely to suffer from excess wind and bloating symptoms.
Let’s face it, processed fast food is a surefire way to put the blocks on your body being able to do its job properly!
So, you try to eat lots of raw food. If your experience is anything like mine, your bloating problems actually increase!
I know whenever I’ve made a decision to eat only salads and fruit for a while to clear my system I’ve ended up with much more chronic bloating, excess wind and even loose stools (and I don’t mean the ones you sit on…).
I’ve never really properly understood why this was the case until I happened upon this excellent video from Natasha over at RawRadiantHealth.com.
She explains that because your intestines are already in a poor condition and your colon is clogged, the addition of fresh raw food, at least in the first few days, will almost certainly make the matter worse. This only happens while your body has chance to clear itself out, and it’s well worth sticking it out with the healthy diet until your body has had time to adjust.
I can attest that she’s absolutely right and it’s well worth doing.
She especially recommends really upping the water intake; trying not to eat raw food that’s too dry (like nuts and seeds); simplifying meals to a couple of basic ingredients and drinking lots of green vegetable juices, especially those containing celery (don’t knock it till you’ve tried it! Delicious!)

Pete, i tried moving to eating only raw fruit/vegetable smoothies and juices for a day but was feeling constantly bloated and gassy. I keep hearing from nutritionists that lightly cooked food is the most soothing for the stomach so I did give up my raw food plan. But you have indicated that this is something that passes so that gives me some hope ! How long did it take for you to gain the advantages of raw food without the uncomfortable symptoms? karan
Hi Karan – I’d say it probably took me at least a few weeks to be fair. From what I’ve read, if your gut is clogged to such an extent that you have regular bloating problems, then not only does the raw food take a while to get things moving, but your system has to adjust too. For me, I’d say it’s definitely worth persevering. After all, our bodies are actually designed to eat raw food, so I figure it’s got to be worth it.
