I was interested to watch a recent edition of Good Morning America, which had a slot on the problem of bloating.
While I had a hard time trying to not to chuckle at the overly loud presenter (shouting and barking at poor Dr. Oz, the guest), the clip is otherwise really informative! With the aid of a rather graphic animation (eurgh!), Dr. Oz explains 4 simple bloating remedies that everyone can try.

The Doctor explains that bloating is a sign of civil war in your gut, where your colon becomes irritated, starts spasming and thus creates gas.
He says that roughly 20% of the gas actually comes from excess air that we swallow, with the remaining 80% from undigested food fermenting. He reckons we produce around 2 liters of gas a day (though I beg to differ, I know I personally create waaaaaay more than this on some days!)
He outlines 4 causes and their corresponding bloating remedies:
Fizzy drinks – the carbonated gas bloats you up and your body has a hard time digesting the artificial sweeteners found in many of these drinks. The bacteria in your gut then gets to work feeding on them instead, thus creating bloating.
Fruit and vegetables – the doctor cites beans, potatoes, broccoli and bananas (among others) as being culprits. This is because they contain sugars and starches our bodies have a problem digesting. Dr. Oz says he swears by Beano to help digest these kinds of foods.
Gluten intolerance – more and more of us are becoming intolerant to the gluten found in many foods (even ice-cream!) Reduce your bloating by cutting out these foods.
Lactose intolerance – even more of us are intolerant to the natural sugars found in milk and milk products. The video shows a range of lactose-reduced or lactose-free products you can use to replace those that cause you bloating issues.
There’s a great bit near the end of the video where Dr. Oz demonstrates the effects of Simethicone on dissolving and breaking down gas in the intestines. I’ll definitely be checking Simethicone out.
If you’re a regular reader, the video doesn’t really tell us any bloating remedies we don’t already know about, but it’s nice to see it explained visually too.
