Do you often suffer from abdominal bloating? Tired of feeling full, bloated, windy, gassy and generally darned uncomfortable for no apparent reason? Fed up feeling a lack of confidence, always having to wear baggier clothes and never wanting to be seen without a t-shirt on?

Guess what? Me too!

So what causes this bloating? Pretty simple actually: it’s trapped gas in the small intestine that’s produced by undigested food fermenting. It causes excess wind, stomach pains and a generally horrible uncomfortable and unpleasant feeling.

If you’re looking for relief, or even a cure, you must understand that while there are some things you can do to help relieve the symptoms of bloating, the very best way of putting a stop to it once and for all is by preventing it in the first place.

Here are my top 13 bloating remedies or prevention tips for you. These have all really worked for me over the last couple of years.

  1. Eat slowly—eating too quickly stops your food being digested properly on the way down;
  2. Don’t drink while eating—flushing your food down stops your body being able to do its proper job of breaking food down;
  3. Cut down on dairy products—lactose in milk and cheese is known to cause many a human being problems (milk is made for baby cows);
  4. Cut down on wheat products—gluten in wheat, especially too much of it, can cause excess gas and bloat;
  5. Avoid some fruits—apples, peaches and pears are typical culprits;
  6. Eliminate gas-producing foods—stuff like beans, cabbage, onions, artichokes, asparagus, brussel sprouts and broccoli certainly make me gassy;
  7. Avoid antibiotics—take too many of these and you destroy the ‘good’ bacteria which digests food;
  8. Watch the sugar and salt—avoid too much of these in processed food, and knock the fizzy drinks on the head too;
  9. Get some peppermint oil and peppermint tea—my number one bloating remedies! Swallow the oil in capsules and drink the tea in, er… tea! Love it;
  10. Cut down on tea and coffee—the caffeine irritates your stomach, causing bloating;
  11. Eat lots of ginger—a wonder herb that boosts digestive fluids and waves goodbye to flatulence and nausea. You can buy ginger capsules and tablets these days which make it easier to take;
  12. Get more exercise—being active keeps your body’s internals in tip-top shape;
  13. Drink lots of water through the day—but not while eating of course… (see #2 above).

Now go forth and banish that bloat! I’d love to hear how these bloating remedies work for you. Let me know in the comments.

Please help spread the word and hit 1 of these buttons. Thanks!

Sarah – I use Colpermin Peppermint Capsules which are really good. I get them on prescription as I have IBS. I would speak to your doctor about them. Holland and Barrett are also good for herbal tablets. I am sure you will find ginger tablets in there and they also give good suggestions.

Hi Jonathan,

It’s hard to recommend a particular remedy when there could be any number of causes for your discomfort. There are loads of articles on the site that may be of use to you trying to work out your particular problem. It could be an intolerance of some kind for instance. Maybe try keeping a diary of all food and drink you have and make a note of any symptoms to try to identify the triggers for your bloating.

For a quick fix, ginger and peppermint are both useful for relieving bloating after eating.

The shortness of breath could be totally unrelated and may be worth getting checkout out medically if it persists.

Hope things improve soon.

Dave , For those who are curious about my post dated 7-Dec-2011, I would like to give some updates -
Though the initial plan was for subtotal colectomy for my bro, it was suspended as one of the doctor’s did not approve it. A tablet called NEOSTIGMINE which increases the peristalitic motion in stomach was given for 15 days after which my bro started developing severe pains – every hour. Then this tablet was stopped. Within 2 days, all his troubles DISAPPEARED. He started feeling hungry, he had good amount food, there was NO BILE VOMITING, good motion in stoma bag daily etc. When I discussed this with my doctor friend, he said – NEOSTIGMINE dose for 15 days would have sorted all his problems however when it continued its effect presence of partial volvulus + increased peristalisis led to severe pain. Luckily, as per this friend’s advice we stopped and then it is going ALL OKAY. Most of the doctors say NEOSTIGMINE increases peristalisis in Large Intestine; however I still wonder how it did good for my brother who had problems primarily in Small intestine. This information may definitely be useful for people searching for Bilous vomit and other discomfort suspected because of intestinal gas.

I have thyroid problems, and it doesn’t help me loose weight. I either loose a little then i gain it all back so it is hard to know what to do. It is also very frustrating. I don’t know what to do?

Hi, I used to think that drinking milk or dairy was the reason to bloat, but now when I eat any meal I expand to the point where my trousers won’t fit… I get constipation, too, so what do I do to stop it? It’s fairly flat in the morning apart from a small bump, but when I eat I look pregnant! How can I prevent it?
