QUICK Q&A: I’m a Woman—Why Do I Get so Bloated?

in Quick tips

Here’s a super-quick Q&A for a question I’m asked quite a bit by readers via email: what are the typical causes of bloating in women?

If you’re a woman and you feel bloated around the time of your period, the cause of this bloating is usually due to the symptoms of PMS (or premenstrual syndrome, sometimes known as PMT too).

The reasons are complex, but here’s the quick answer:

During the 2 weeks or so before your period, your hormone levels rise much higher than usual. This high concentration of hormones has 2 side-effects when it comes to causing stomach bloating:

  • Slower digestive system – food, waste products and gas move more slowly through your system, leading to a build of stools and gas that blows your stomach up like a balloon.
  • Water retention – your body retains more water, which also adds to the appearance of bloating.

The good news is it’s pretty easy to remedy, or at least to relive the symptoms. Rather than go into all the details here, head over to find out my easy PMS bloating remedies. I hope these tips get you some relief. :)

Please help spread the word and hit 1 of these buttons. Thanks!
