Sudden bloating of the stomach can happen at any time. It can really take you by surprise. Many readers of this site have commented on how they actually feel more bloated and uncomfortable after drinking water or other liquids.
Now… drinking more water is actually great advice if you’re trying to combat your bloating problems. It certainly shouldn’t be causing more bloating!
So what causes this sudden stomach bloating in some people after drinking water?
This little video tries to answer that question. Take a look:
If drinking water is causing more bloating, please don’t stop! Your digestive system will likely be adapting to the higher water intake, and you may well initially feel worse, not better. It’s important to keep drinking fresh water regularly (around 8 glasses a day). Your bloating reaction is temporary, I promise. It’ll pay off in the long run. And you can thank me when it does!
Please help spread the word and hit 1 of these buttons. Thanks!

Try sleeping on your left side. Your left leg should be straight and your right leg should be bent at 90 degrees.
I have bloating often but I know it’s not caused by what I eat. I eat small portions of food often and I only drink water and tea. I’m a vegetarian who hardly eats any dairy too. I only become bloated if I don’t eat as often as I usually do and when I I fly, which is way too often. I never get bloated after a meal just at random times and it happens rapidly and it is extremely noticeable making me look like I’m at least 4 months pregnant.
Is there anything else I can take besides peppermint tea? I would just like to have a couple different remedies on hand with me because I’d rather be safe than sorry.
Hi there Dom – I’ve found fennel tea to be really good as well actually, although I do swear by peppermint capsules. I get them from my doctor, take 1 or 2 about 30 minutes before eating.
Mind you, it sounds like you’re doing lots of things right. I feel for you with the ’4 months pregnant’ thing, believe me!
